Across the Presbytery May 22, 2019

5/22/2019

Thank you for your faithful support of the MINC Emergency Fund during the worst of our long winter.  The Fund is currently almost depleted.  There are still folks calling who are in need of assistance with fuel for heating.  They have exhausted all, HEAP benefits.  I think of them each time my furnace starts. If you are able to give at this time it would be most appreciated. Mail checks to Cynthia Coleman 5 Grant Street, Potsdam, NY  13676

Location for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) sixth Big Tent will run from August 1-3, 2019 in downtown Baltimore, Maryland.

The theme- based on Romans 12:2, Called to a Movement beyond Institution, will emphasize our hope of the gospel and its power to challenge institutional conventions. The goal is to come together and live in this moment, immersed in our current cultural context of racial division, gender identity, and economic disparity to be renewed, refreshed and reformed, so that we may be sent out to affect change in our own communities. Based at 2 downtown hotels, the Radisson and Lord Baltimore, the event will be accessible and affordable- making it possible for more Presbyterians to come together for a time of learning, engaging and fellowship.

Further details will be posted on the Big Tent website at pcusa.org/bigtent when finalized.

Childwold Memorial Presbyterian Church, which has been in recent decades a summer only church, will begin services this year on Mother’s Day, May 12.  For so many years in the past, we relied on seminary students and teaching pastors who only had their summers free.  We now have the services of Marty Weitz, and having a pastor who lives in St. Lawrence County has allowed us to remain open later into the autumn, and now, this year, open earlier as well.  Join us at 11:00 am each Sunday, and stay for our unique “Front Porch Ministry” after services!  Mark Friden, Elder.

On behalf of the Church and Community Program in Canton NY wish to thank the Mission Committee of the Presbytery of Northern New York for two gifts of $500 each month in March and April 2019. Our local, not for profit organization is an important resource for needy families in our community throughout the year. In 2018 this organization assisted an average of over 422 individuals with food every month. That means 164 families in our 5 town service area received enough nutritious food for 6,770 meals each month. In 2018 we started a new program to serve seniors and other homebound people living in the two high rises on Riverside Drive. We will also partnership with the Ogdensburg Correctional Facility’s garden produce program, and look for opportunities to continue to impact poverty in our area.

Thank you for being a friend and supporter of the Church and Community Program, Patricia Alden, President of the Board.
