Characteristics of the Area
The Presbytery of Northern New York extends 200 miles from Lake Ontario to Lake Champlain and from the Adirondacks to the Canadian border and generally encompasses the counties, in New York State, of Jefferson, St. Lawrence, Franklin, Clinton, and Essex. It is an area of mining, dairying, industry, paper making, agriculture, a military installation, tourism attracted by lakes and the Thousand Island area, and winter sports. In general, its population is in small towns and villages, with Plattsburgh and Watertown being its largest communities.
Colleges within the area include State University campuses at Plattsburgh, Potsdam, and Canton, St. Lawrence University, Clarkson University, Paul Smiths College, Jefferson Community College, North Country Community College, and Clinton Community College.
The present Presbytery Office, in Sanfordville, NY, is centrally located from either end of the Presbytery. The Synod Office is located in Syracuse.
There is scheduled air service to Plattsburgh, Massena, Ogdensburg, Watertown and Saranac Lake. Rail passenger service is available at Plattsburgh. U.S. Route 11 is the major highway serving the Presbytery, along with interstate highways from New York City to the Canadian border at Rouses Point.
